AGAINST THE WIND

BY BOB SEGER

(To my brother)

There’s a song by Bob Seger that reminds me of my little brother Bob:

“It seems like yesterday

But it was long ago

…There in the darkness with the radio, playing low

And the secrets that we shared

The mountains that we moved

Caught like a wildfire out of control

‘Til there was nothing left to burn

And nothing left to prove

And I remember what (he) said to me

How (he) swore that it never would end

…Wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then

Against the wind

We were runnin’ against the wind

We were young and strong,

We were runnin’ against the wind

The years rolled slowly passed

And (he) found (himself) alone

Surrounded by strangers (he) thought were (his) friends

… (he) found (himself) further and further from (his) home

And I guess (he) lost (his) way

There were oh-so-many roads

(He) was living to run and running to live

Never worry about paying or even how much (he) owed

Moving eight miles a minute for months at a time

Breaking all of the rules that would bend

(He) began to find (himself) searching

Searching for shelter again and again

Against the wind…”

On the outside, Bob was a big guy; he walked confidently.

But deep down, he was a gentle, sweet soul and one of the funniest guys around. My brother never felt good enough to cope in this world.  His pain was too great, and he lost.

I’m sad for Kathy (his girlfriend), Cassandra, Parker, Iris, William, Mom, and Bob’s close friends.  But, I’m also so grateful for the short time we had with Bob.

As I reflect, and we all reflect on Bob’s life, his story mattered and is there to remind us  – We are all “runnin’ against the wind.”

Until we meet again…

Bobby and Kath, I love you.

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelict. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
